Level 1 - Foundations of Alignment
This introductory class is designed for students new to yoga. During the session we will concentrate on poses which strengthen and stretch the legs, back, and shoulders providing the foundation to move onto Level 1.5 /Experienced Beginner. The Universal Principals of Alignment according to Anusara Yoga will be emphasized and related to adhikara (the qualities of studentship). Students also will be introduced to basic breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation, and relaxation.
Level 1.5 - Experienced Beginner
This class is a continuation of the Level 1 / Foundations of Alignment class. The emphasis will be on refining awareness of alignments, building more endurance and flexibility in the body, and enjoying wider variety of postures. This class is designed to empower the beginning student to gradually advance through levels of practice. This class is suitable for those with previous yoga experience.
Level 2 - Continuing
The Continuing class is an active practice ideal for those who are physically fit and wish to deepen their yoga practice. It is recommended that the student has completed either Level 1 or Level 1.5 before joining this level, unless you have previous experience. You will be encouraged to move with awareness while being mindful of the subtle body and breath. Variations on the “Sun Salutation” will be taught as well as seated poses, stronger standing poses, backbends, and the fundamentals of handstand and headstand. Yoga philosophy as it relates to asana practice, pranayama, meditation, and relaxation techniques complete the full experience of the class.
Level 3 - Intermediate
A physically challenging introduction to more advanced poses or sequences. We will learn the basics of arm balances, deeper backbends, more advanced inversions, and the art of ‘vinyasa’ or flowing sequences of poses. An exuberant exploration of Sun Salutations will begin each class followed by a specific focus on one family of postures - back bending, twists, hip openers, etc. Breathing, meditation techniques and relaxation will be included in each session along with a deepening study of Anusara Yoga principals and Tantric philosophy. Regular practice outside of class is encouraged and it is recommended the student complete two sessions of Level 2 /Continuing classes before attending. Please, no major physical limitations or injuries.
Level 4 - Advanced
This class is perfect for those with extensive yoga experience and is designed for those capable of holding a freestanding headstand, who can kick to the wall for handstand, and who can practice Urdhva Dhanurasana with straight arms. Regular practice outside of class is expected. Each week this class will have a different postural focus: back bending, inversions, arm balances, and more complex vinyasa sequences, meditation, and guided relaxation are practiced. For those who are ready, this class will allow a fertile environment to explore the “deeper edges” of yoga. No major therapeutic limitations, please.
Vinyasa Flow
A dynamic style of yoga characterized by flowing sequences of poses. The breath is emphasized and used to orchestrate the movement between each posture. This style of yoga integrates alignment and intuition, strength and fluidity, and meditation and action. A solid knowledge and understanding of the poses and alignment is recommended - please, no major physical limitations. It is recommended the student complete two sessions of Level 2 /Continuing classes before attending or have previous Vinyasa experience.
Yoga for Men
This class is designed especially for men’s bodies & physical activities - held in a fun & supportive environment. As an All Levels class we will focus on basic poses primarily targeting the hamstrings, quadriceps, hips & shoulders. The practice is sequenced to create more flexibility while maintaining overall strength and endurance which will enhance other activities like golf, tennis, running, cycling, etc. No previous experience is necessary..
Gentle Yoga
Enjoy a class based on meditation principals using gentle stretches, breath work, and yoga asana to create a healthy body and a peaceful mind. Each session ends with a period of deep relaxation allowing the body to integrate all the postures. This class is designed for those who enjoy a slower practice & quieter practice. Taught in the Kripalu style of yoga, it is paced more slowly than Level 1 or Level 1.5.
Kids & ‘Tweens Yoga (Ages 5-9 & 10-14)
Yoga helps children calm down and focus, and helps promote self discipline. This playful practice will also build physical strength and endurance while facilitating self-awareness. We will explore through interaction and creativity yoga postures, breathing and meditation with age appropriate games, stories, songs and relaxation... and just having fun! Taught by a full time elementary teacher.
Philosophy, Pranayama, Meditation & Relaxation
During this hour long class we will explore aspects of Kashmir Shaivism & Rajanica Tantra philosophy as it relates to daily living in the 21 century. After the philosophy discussion, basic breathing and meditation techniques will be taught and practiced followed by a deliciously long period of reclined relaxation. A perfect way to end the week and head into the weekend. No previous experience or knowledge necessary.
Qigong
Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice which works to make us healthier by focusing on our vital energy (qi...pronounced ‘chee’ or prana in Sanskrit). This practice strives to create extra qi or the make the qi we were born with stronger. Many Eastern disciplines are based on this same idea (like yoga) but qigong differs in that it is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In this hour long class, as you move through slow poses, you will develop skills to better understand elements of Chinese Medicine like yin/yang & Five Element Theory, acupuncture points, and energy meridians. Living Your Yoga
In the "Living Your Yoga" class, Lorrie will guide people through journaling and other activities to integrate the teachings we learn on the sticky mat and to learn how they relate to our daily lives. Each month's classes will be centered around a theme and conclude with a guided relaxation. Upcoming themes include Abundance, Relationships, Gratitude...
